# Skills

> Skills are instruction packs you upload so the MapX AI follows your team's specialized workflows.

Skills are instruction packs that teach the AI how to do specialized work correctly. Each skill is a `SKILL.md` file with step-by-step guidance, exact commands, and rules for a specific task. When a task matches a skill, the AI loads it and follows it.

## Upload your own skills

You can add your own skills so the AI applies your team's conventions and workflows:

1. Open **Skills** in the dashboard.
2. Upload a `SKILL.md` file with a name and description.
3. Enable it — enabled skills are loaded into every conversation turn.

Write skills the same way you would brief a colleague: what the task is, which steps to follow, which commands or formats to use, and what to avoid. Disable a skill at any time to stop it from loading.

## How the AI uses skills

Skills load automatically. When a task matches an enabled skill's name or description, the AI reads the skill before acting.

<Note>
  Skill content is part of the AI's instructions, not a separate database. Uploaded skills must follow the `SKILL.md` format with clear, actionable guidance.
</Note>

See [MCP connections](/en/concepts/mcp) for how the AI executes map operations, and [Knowledge bases](/en/concepts/knowledge-bases) for giving the AI retrievable documents.
